Leather Care Instructions

Caring for Your Artisan & Lær Leather

Thank you for investing in an Artisan & Lær handcrafted leather piece. Each item is made with care and intention, designed to last a lifetime—if properly cared for. Please take the time to read the following guide to help preserve the beauty and longevity of your new leather product.

The Beauty of Finished Leather

When you purchase from Artisan & Lær, you’re not just buying a product—you’re acquiring a one-of-a-kind piece, individually handmade and rich in character.

Over time, your leather will develop a natural patina that reflects your lifestyle and journey. This evolution is part of leather’s charm—scratches, scuffs, and marks from daily use all contribute to its unique story.

Avoid Harsh Chemicals

Never use chemical-based cleaners or conditioners on your leather. These can damage the surface and compromise any paints, dyes, or sealants used during production.

What to Do If It Gets Wet

  • Do not spot clean—always clean the entire surface evenly.

  • If your piece gets wet, gently blot the moisture with a soft, dry cloth.

  • Allow it to dry naturally, away from direct heat or sunlight. Do not use a hairdryer or place near a heater.

  • For faster drying, place the item indoors under a fan, avoiding exposure to harsh elements.

Storage Guidelines

These care instructions apply to finished cow leather and are also relevant for other cow leather goods such as jackets or furniture.

To keep your leather piece in its best condition:

  • Store it in a breathable cotton dust bag when not in use

  • Alternatively, place it in a cool, dry area with moderate airflow, away from direct sunlight

Conditioning Your Leather

1. Clean First

For routine care, simply wipe your leather with a dry, soft cloth. For deeper cleaning, use a very diluted soap and lukewarm water solution and a soft cloth to gently wipe the surface. Do not scrub or use abrasive cloths.

Always clean the full surface area—never spot clean.

2. Test the Conditioner

Before applying any leather conditioner:

  • Test it on an inconspicuous area (e.g. bottom of a bag, underside of a belt)

  • Let the area dry for at least 24 hours

  • If no discoloration or change occurs, it’s safe to proceed

This step is especially important for high-quality leathers such as full-grain or aniline types, which can be more sensitive to product ingredients.

3. Apply Conditioner

Conditioning helps maintain the leather’s suppleness and prevents drying or cracking. Apply your chosen conditioner sparingly with a clean cloth, allowing the leather to absorb it fully. Wipe away any excess with a soft cloth.

Recommended frequency: Every 6 to 12 months, or as needed depending on use and environment.

Types of Leather Conditioners

  • Leather Creams: Moisturize without altering colour; ideal for aniline leathers

  • Leather Oils: Deep conditioning (e.g. lanolin, neatsfoot oil), but may darken leather

  • Leather Waxes: Provide water resistance, though less moisturizing
